We need to rethink all our ideas about the Universe.

(c) Graham Hawker. Marbella. 10 April 2024

On 11 July 2019 I published my article A new unit of time. The ideas originated in the strange idea that the universe suddenly started, after an infinite time doing nothing, with a sudden enormous explosion. And current observations had shown that the universe was, contrary to what Einstein had predicted, expanding ever more quickly. So my new unit of time was a way of explaining these two strange phenomena.

I then turned to the other strange problem that was puzzling me. When Newton saw an apple fall off the tree he theorized that a force he called GRAVITY caused the apple to fall down. But I couldn't understand how the apple knew about gravity. What was happening to the apple to pull it down? Simply saying "force of gravity" is not an explanation, it is just words. And the more I researched the topic, the more I found that the problem was not being answered. So Einstein had explained that the idea of "gravity" is incorrect. The apparent attraction is actually caused by curved space-time. And this is explored in an easy to understand video on YouTube.

But this still leaves me with the puzzle of why objects bend space-time. Conventional scientific theories explain that it is caused by "mass" but there are no satisfactory definitions of what "mass" actually is. Objects are made of atoms, and these atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons, which in turn are made up of quarks. But what is "mass" and where does it come from? And why does it curve space-time? And this has caused me to think of a radical new explanation.

The "elementary particles" of which everything is made are maybe not particles at all and mass is not something solid or real. The "elementary particles" may be simply little distortions of space-time. Little whirlpools of the basic idea of space and time. So really the universe contains nothing real at all. It is simply like a lot of tiny whirlpools grouping together on the surface of a pool of water.

So this is my next area of research.
